Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
