Cadillac Adopts NASA Strategy to Build Team from Scratch for Melbourne Grand Prix.

Just over a full year ago at the Vegas Grand Prix, Cadillac were at last granted the green light as F1's most recent participant for 2026. Constructing the organization from nothing has involved a hectic work rate that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo program. As the sport arrives on Vegas this weekend, the team are aware the deadline is approaching.

The Countdown to Australia

At the season finale of the season to be held in the United States, with just over 100 days to go before they take to the track for the first time in Melbourne at the 2026 opener, Cadillac have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a never-ending challenge, they are cognizant there will never be enough hours in the day.

The technical director, Nick Chester, came aboard the newly formed team in the spring of 2023 not long after it was created, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its core ever since and gets a amused expression when reflecting on the experience.

“You can have five minutes thinking back at what you have accomplished and think: ‘Amazing, isn’t this fantastic what the team has created in less than three years,’” he says. “Then the very next instant you think: ‘Well, there is still quite a lot to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

The CTO achieved victories at Renault in the driver Fernando Alonso's title-winning years of 2005/2006 and was in charge of engineering strategy at the recently formed Mercedes Formula E team, but nothing has quite compared with the challenge of launching the iconic American Cadillac marque, a factory team sponsored by the corporate entity, GM, into Formula One.

“Building an grand prix team from the ground up, when will you ever have the possibility to do that?” he observes. “There's nothing comparable. In an existing team you won't have the opportunity to change organizational mindset.”

With each passing day that passes focus are more focused on the approaching critical moment in Melbourne and targets are being handled.

“One must presume that a brand-new squad joining the grid is going to be last but just making it to the starting line will be an accomplishment in itself,” Lowdon stated this year and while Nick Chester shared this view he believed the squad had a reputation to build as well.
“The first thing we want to show is that we belong on the grid,” he says. “In order that we arrive and we operate well. We aim to demonstrate that we are a serious contender doing the right things on the track. When we have demonstrated that we’re really credible, then we aim to demonstrate improvement subsequently.”

Driver Lineup and Recruitment Effort

In August they recruited Sergio Pérez and Valtteri as their drivers for the 2026 season, a tandem remarkable for their vast knowledge in operating at the front in two top-tier teams, the Red Bull team and the Mercedes team, and Bottas echoed the attitude of fighting spirit.

“Naturally, we’re realistic,” he said. “There’s going to be a mountain of work to do, and it will likely be probably a challenging beginning, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we’re not there to finish last. I believe given this organization, with these individuals, these people, there’s no reason why we won't be able to progress rapidly to the front and achieve good results.”

To achieve that goal staff acquisition has been in full swing, with personnel now reaching more than 400 and scheduled to reach the objective of 600 swiftly. Complementing their present headquarters at the UK base, the team are in the phase of building an HQ at the Fishers location in Indianapolis and there is the GM works in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are developing the plant to build the power unit, set for 2029 – in the meantime they will run power from Ferrari – and the aerodynamic facility in Cologne. It is a sophisticated organisation, different from the movement in the sport for more centralization, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which Chester referred to.

Apollo Blueprint

“It’s highly modelled on the Apollo project,” remarked Graeme Lowdon shortly before the British GP in July. “We have a clear-eyed view, we know how difficult it is. The deadlines, are incredibly tight. Alright, it's not a space expedition, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have embraced, instead of the traditional management structure, a flat management structure comparable to that of Nasa’s, where there were a assortment of specialist groups all tackling distinct elements of the program at a variety of locations.

“When you must follow a procedure where an issue arises and they report it to their team leader, that leader communicates with a leader at a different location, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” explains the CTO. “We give authority to team members to really get on with it. Avoiding managerial sign-off for each action is so much cleaner and faster.”

The Future

The efficacy of this agile approach will be proven in the heat of competition in 2026 and there is no little amount on the line for the sport, too. Cadillac have signed as their test driver the 25-year-old Californian Colton Herta
